The OET (Occupational English Test) is an internationally examined English language proficiency test that is specifically designed for healthcare professionals. Compared to other general English language proficiency tests, the OET assesses English language skills within a medical and clinical context. In this case, the test is far more suited for those looking to demonstrate their proficiency in English as a non-native speaker.
The OET examines four key areas within medical contexts. These are listening, reading, writing and speaking. Each of these is assessed with some sort of direct connection to healthcare scenarios. For example, the listening element of the examination may evaluate an individual’s language proficiency in the context of understanding consultations with a patient. The OET is available for 12 healthcare-related professions. These are dentistry, dietetics, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiography, speech pathology and veterinary science. Each version of the test is customised to reflect real-world tasks and scenarios related to the profession.
The OET is recognized by several healthcare licensing and regulatory authorities in Canada and Australia, such as nursing boards and, in some cases, medical councils. It serves as a strong demonstration of English proficiency within a medical context, which can help when seeking employment in the healthcare sector. In certain cases, the OET may also be used for immigration purposes, typically in employment-based migration programs for healthcare professionals.
