The citizenship test is a 45-minute assessment that evaluates your knowledge of Canada or Australia. The test is primarily conducted online, although in certain circumstances it may be administered in person. It consists of 20 questions, which may be multiple-choice or true/false. The questions focus on two main areas. First, they assess the rights and responsibilities of citizens, ensuring that applicants are well-informed. Second, they cover aspects of the country itself, including history, geography, economy, government, laws, and national symbols. To pass the test, an individual must answer at least 15 out of the 20 questions correctly.
Passing the citizenship test may lead to an interview with a citizenship officer before citizenship is granted. This is determined on a case-by-case basis. In other instances, individuals who pass the test may be directly invited to a citizenship ceremony. Applicants have up to three attempts to pass the test. If a candidate is unsuccessful after the third attempt, they will be invited to a hearing with a citizenship officer where similar questions will be asked. Passing the hearing allows the application to continue being processed, while failure results in refusal and then need to reapply. These procedures apply in both Canada and Australia.
